Understanding Toxic Livers What can we do to help our livers work more effectively? By Dr. Roni DeLuz PHD, RN, ND Many people do not realize the extra work that their liver is doing just to cleanse the blood of the toxins that they consume in their everyday diet. When the body is very toxic, it is unable to work efficiently, as it becomes clogged and congested. The liver has a variety of functions that we depend on each and everyday for our body to work as designed. It filters more toxins out of the system than any other organ and it is also a fat burning machine. The liver uses a cleanser called bile that is produced in the gallbladder and breaks down fat into a liquid that can then travel through the wall of the small intestine and into the bloodstream. When the body is toxic, it can't perform these functions very efficiently. Another vital role that the liver has is the maintaining of blood sugar concentrations; storing and releasing glucose as needed. When the body is toxic, it makes the hard job of the liver even harder. If the digestive system doesn't work properly, we are unable to completely digest our food, which means we become constipated and acidic. Due to the typical American diet, most people are overstressing their livers due to the high fat diets that most consume. A liver that is sluggish also causes a variety of other issues including: · memory problems · hormonal imbalances · fatigue · depression · bloating · weight problems · whites of eyes turn yellow However, there is hope and help for our overburdened livers. When the liver is unhealthy, your whole body is unhealthy, but detox can help to restore it. There are several ways that you can cleanse the liver including coffee enemas, juice flushes and herbal remedies. One way you can flush the liver out entirely is by drinking green juices. There are several combinations of vegetables, greens, leaves and roots that can be used to create tasteful green drinks. Typical ingredients for these include: · carrots · beets & beet leaves · dandelion greens · ginger · alfalfa sprouts · red radish · garlic · burdock leaf or root Wheatgrass is also used commonly but should be used only in a single, one-ounce shot. Additionally, you can use herbal teas to help the liver in detoxification and repairing cells.
